Job vs Life Assignment - What Was I Created For?

One quite uneventful morning, I received a call from a friend.

“Gael. Send me your CV," he said. "There’s a job opening, and it has to do with writing.”

This was one of those calls I wish came my way when I was dead broke and desperate for a job. It’s not that I didn’t need one at the time of the call though. It's just that there's this funny thing I don't understand that happens; It's hard to find the things you are so desperate for. When you are not, they bombard you so hard from all corners, that you may lose them from a lack of choice.

“Thanks a lot bro,” I replied. For those who know me well, I’m sure you won’t be surprised with my response, “I need some time to think about it, and weigh my options before I make a decision.” And now that I’m married, I can’t just jump to decisions without talking with my wife first. And so I waited until we got to talk. I think that deep down though, I already knew what my decision would be. But I guess most times we just have to go through the motions - Standard procedure...lol.

“You know me, booboo,” she said, “I’d take it.”

“Yeah,” I replied, “But you know I have a project coming up beginning of next year. I think it would be too much to have a job, and work on it at the same time.”

She said, “I think it’s possible. You could work on the project on the weekends.”

“I know, but I think one of the traps that keeps us from living out our purpose is a job, with the security of a monthly salary and all."

I had two options, both within my field of work, writing. One was a job. The other was what I saw as a life assignment - my 2nd ghostwriting project. Both guaranteed some paper too. One was long term, the other short term. Dang! God will always test you. That will teach you to fully lean on Him for a lot of things, including direction.

The next morning I made the call.

“Hey bro. Thanks a lot for the offer but I won’t be applying for the job." After explaining my situation to him, I let him know, "I’ve decided to focus on the assignment ahead, rather than the job.”

I’d figured that the assignment will need my full, undivided attention. It’s one I take seriously, and one I need to work on with excellence. It’s one I believe will lead to more open doors if I’m faithful to it. It’s one I know that God ordained for me.

“That’s a very good thing to do,” he affirmed me.

“Thanks for affirming that,” I said back to him. “I do consult though.”

“Great. I’ll let you know once something comes up.”

Again, for those who know me well, you know that I believe something will definitely come up when I'm in such a situation. My faith grows deeper every time God comes through. The Author has it all planned out. All you have to do is stay prepared for your assignment. If you don't know what it is yet, start asking Him now. You could be missing out on exactly what you were created for.

Grace to you!
